Published Title Author Price
1898 SUPERBE ORENOQUE|LE Verne, Jules $ 1650.00

the magnificent first illustrated edition -

of a Verne tale not translated into English until 2003

Verne, Jules. LE SUPERBE ORENOQUE. Illustrations de George Roux. Paris: Collection Hetzel, n.d. [1898]. 8 pp ads, undated (but with 1898 as the latest date listed, and with this title the last one listed). Original pictorial red cloth, all edges gilt.

First Illustrated Edition, in the original French. The story "portrayed colonial depradations within a tale of three rival expeditions exploring the South American river, one of them led by a girl disguised as a man, who is searching for her lost father" [T&M]. This is one of a handful of Verne titles that still had not been translated into English by the end of the 20th Century -- though THE MIGHTY ORINOCO finally made its appearance in 2003.

Verne's tales were first serialized in Hetzel's "Magasin Illustre d'Education et de Recreation," after which they came out in small-format books (in cloth or in wrappers); all three of these formats had some but not many illustrations. Toward the end of each year Hetzel would then bring out, for the holidays, each new tale of that year in a first fully-illustrated edition, as here: large-format (about 11-by-7-1/2 inches), fully-illustrated with 72 illustrations (some in more than one color), in a magnificently colorful binding, all edges gilt.

This copy of LE SUPERBE ORENOQUE is properly bound in the "a la mappemonde" binding, which is the first binding state for this title; likewise, the ads at the rear properly list this title as the last published. It is in bright, just-about-fine condition, with scarcely any wear or fading. For the Verne enthusiast who wants to read this tale with all of these illustrations, this remains the only way to do so.
