First American Edition. "The weakening of France by her efforts against Prussia enabled us [Britain] to wrest Canada from her, to crush her rising power in India, and to obtain that absolute supremacy at sea that we have never since lost" (from Henty's preface). The London edition is dated 1898 but was issued in 1897, like this American edition. A fine copy. See Newbolt 82; Dartt pp 159-160.
