BEARS AND DACOITS |
Henty, G. A. |
$ 250.00 |
Henty, G[eorge]. A[lfred]. BEARS AND DACOITS and Other Stories. With Coloured Frontispiece and Seven Full-Page Illustrations. London Glasgow and Dublin: Blackie and Son, n.d. [1901]. 16 pp undated ads (paginated 9-16 + 25-32). Original pictorial red cloth.
Second Edition, first issue (with the lettering in gilt, on both the front cover and the spine). "Bears and Dacoits" first appeared in the June 1881 issue of Union Jack, consituting one of Henty's earliest children's tales. The first edition in book form was the now-legendarily-rare Blackie edition of 1896 (though undated), issued in sage green limp cloth. Next came this edition, undated but published in May 1901, which also includes two other Henty stories for children -- "White-Faced Dick" and "A Brush with the Chinese." ("Dacoits," incidentally, were marauding gangs of robbers in India.)
This is a very good-plus copy (spine slightly faded, occasional foxing, 1903 school prize label on the front paste-down). For collectors unable to acquire a copy of the 1896 edition, this has become, for all intents and purposes, the first collectible edition of BEARS AND DACOITS. Newbolt 69.2 (and plate 121).
