Henty, G[eorge]. A[lfred]. WITH WOLFE IN CANADA: or The Winning of a Continent. With Twelve Full-Page Illustrations by Gordon Browne. New York: Scribner and Welford, 1887. 40 pp undated ads (Blackie). Original pictorial terra-cotta cloth, beveled.
First American edition, actually produced and bound by Blackie in England. WITH WOLFE IN CANADA was one of the first two Henty titles that Blackie shipped to America with a "Scribner & Welford" title page -- in 1886 (the other title was THE YOUNG CARTHAGINIAN). Only 725 copies of WOLFE were sent, but even this was too many, as far fewer copies of other titles were sent the following year. WOLFE is one of only five Scribner & Welford Henty titles to be (post-)dated on the title page (the two sent over in 1886 plus the three sent over in 1888).
This particular copy reads "Scribner & Welford" at the foot of the spine (not all do), and it has the Blackie 40-page ad catalogue that leads off with the Henty titles Blackie had issued the preceding year (beginning with THE LION OF THE NORTH). Condition is very good-plus (minor wear at the spine ends but otherwise quite clean). Eastman p. 4.
