Henty, G[eorge]. A[lfred]. THE YOUNG CARTHAGINIAN: A Story of The Times of Hannibal. With Twelve Full-Page Illustrations by C. J. Staniland R.I. New York: Scribner and Welford, 1887. 48 pp undated ads (Blackie). Original pictorial olive-green cloth, beveled.
First American edition, actually produced and bound by Blackie in England. THE YOUNG CARTHAGINIAN was one of the first two Henty titles that Blackie shipped to America with a "Scribner & Welford" title page -- in 1886 (the other title was WITH WOLFE IN CANADA). Only 475 copies of CARTHAGINIAN were sent; 200 more were sent the following year, but these are differentiable. CARTHAGINIAN is one of only five Scribner & Welford Henty titles to be (post-)dated on the title page (the two sent over in 1886 plus the three sent over in 1888).
This copy has the subtitle "A Story of The Times of Hannibal," which is the second and usual issue (for Blackie copies as well as S&W ones). Included is the [1886] Blackie ad catalogue leading off with this title, and the Blackie half-title (listing books priced in pounds) -- as S&W versions were not created until the next year. Condition is very good-plus (some droplet-marks on the blank rear cover, Christmas 1886 presentation inscription on the endpaper plus the same original owner's inkstamp on the title page). Eastman pp 4-5.
