Henty, G[eorge]. A[lfred]. FOR NAME AND FAME: or, Through Afghan Passes. With Eight Full Page Illustrations by Gordon Browne. New York: Scribner and Welford, n.d. 24 pp undated ads. Original pictorial green cloth, beveled.
First American Edition, actually published and bound in England by Blackie -- one of only 185 copies. This is a boys' tale sited amidst the Second Afghan War of 1878. In 1886 Blackie sent over some copies of two Henty titles, with "Scribner and Welford" title pages post-dated 1887. Then in 1887, Blackie sent over (undated) copies of the seventeen other Henty titles they had published in England, including this one, in very small numbers (250 or fewer copies for thirteen of the seventeen) -- making these 1887 Scribner & Welford titles among the scarcest of Henty books. Five of the titles, again including this one, have the smallest number of copies -- a mere 185.
This copy has the "1887-B" ad catalogue, with a seven-line description for THE SEVEN WISE SCHOLARS (no priority established). Condition is very good (some rubbing at the extremities, a bit of soil on the blank rear cover, endpapers cracked). Quite a scarce book. Eastman pp 5-7.
