Published Title Author Price
1887 ST. GEORGE FOR ENGLAND Henty, G. A.
Browne, Gordon
$ 350.00

Henty, G[eorge]. A[lfred]. ST. GEORGE FOR ENGLAND: A Tale of Cressy and Poitiers. With Eight Full-Page Illustrations by Gordon Browne. New York: Scribner and Welford, n.d. 32 pp undated ads. Original pictorial dark blue cloth, beveled.

First American Edition, later issue, actually published and bound in England by Blackie. This is a boys' tale sited amidst the campaign against the Spanish Armada during the 1330s. In 1887, Blackie sent over (undated) copies of the seventeen Henty titles they had published in England, including this one, in very small numbers (250 or fewer copies for thirteen of the seventeen) -- making the 1887 Scribner & Welford titles among the scarcest of Henty books. Five of the titles, again including this one, had the smallest number of copies -- a mere 185.

This copy, however, was not actually sent over until two years later -- as its ad catalogue is the 1889 (first issue) one, leading off with WITH LEE IN VIRGINIA (without critics' reviews). Condition is near-fine (volume slightly askew, minor rubbing W at the extremities). Eastman pp 5-7.
