Henty, G[eorge]. A[lfred]. BERIC THE BRITON: A Story of the Roman Invasion. With Twelve Illustrations by W. Parkinson. London: Blackie & Son, 1893. 32 pp undated ads. Original pictorial brown cloth, beveled.
First Edition of this boys' tale taking place during the Roman invasion of Britain. (Beric, boy-chief of a British tribe, is carried captive to Rome, where he excels as a gladiator and becomes Nero's personal protector.) Though dated 1893, this Blackie edition was published in June 1892; Scribner's American edition is dated 1892, but was undoubtedly issued no earlier than Blackie's.
This is a very good copy (volume slightly askew, minor rubbing at the corners, endpapers cracked). We seldom see pre-1895 Henty titles in much better condition. Newbolt 59.1.
