First Appearance of "G. A. Henty's last serial story" (per the front cover), appearing in three monthly issues beginning with May 1903 -- accompanied by six illustrations by Frances Ewan. In 1906 Blackie would publish a volume A SOLDIER'S DAUGHTER AND OTHER STORIES. This annual volume (over 1000 pages!) also contains a black bordered "In Memoriam" for Henty, plus a lengthy "Reminiscence" of Henty by the other great writer of juvenile books of that era, George Manville Fenn. This copy has been recased, with later endpapers, but is in very good condition (spine faded, as usual with violet, but little wear). Newbolt 210.
