$ 6000.00 |
Verne, Jules. THE VOYAGES AND ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN HATTERAS. With Two Hundred and Fifty Illustrations by Riou. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black and gilt.
First American Edition (and first edition in English). Crewmembers sign on for a mysterious voyage to an unknown destination, in a ship without a captain; ultimately Captain Hatteras reveals himself (after posing as a member of the crew) and announces that they are headed for the North Pole. Mutiny follows...
This is the complete tale, containing both parts (which were subsequently often issued separately) -- "The English at the North Pole" and "The Desert of Ice." The tale first came out in French in 1866, but this was the first edition in English, published in June 1874 (though postdated 1875); Routledge's British edition edition came out in two volumes later in 1874, and combined into one volume in 1875.
This is one of the most handsome Osgood productions of any of Verne's works, featuring the "dog-sailor" steering the ship while two sailors look on in amazement. This copy is in terra-cotta cloth; other copies we have seen were in blue moiré or green cloth. This is a remarkably fine, bright copy (one tiny chip in the edge of the front free endpaper, but that's the only flaw we can come up with). Taves & Michaluk V004; Edwards 4.
