TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEAS |
Verne, Jules |
$ 8750.00 |
Verne, Jules ("translated from the French of"). TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEAS. With One Hundred and Twelve Illustrations. Seventh Edition. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1875. 8 pp undated ads. Original green cloth decorated in black and gilt, beveled, all edges gilt.
Seventh British edition of Verne's classic tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Sampson Low published the first edition in English in November 1872 -- now a volume that is virtually impossible to find (we have never seen one). Soon after, Osgood and then Smith, both of Boston, published their editions that are so similar to each other. Over the next few years Sampson Low continued to issue reprints of their 1872 edition, still in the same binding; these too are very scarce today. T&M cites a Sampson Low third edition published by April 1873, plus a fifth edition by July 1874, and we have had a "Fourth Edition" dated 1874 -- the only time in over 25 years that we have a UK edition earlier than this one. (All of these are not really "editions," but rather printings of the first edition.) All of these printings feature a pictorial binding showing the Nautilus scanning the ocean floor and all kinds of sea life with a gilt beam of light; on the spine is a bug-eyed giant squid.
This copy is in near-fine condition. The only noteworthy flaw is that the front free endpaper is missing; there is a tiny bit of wear at the corners, but externally this is a bright, handsome volume. A first UK edition in original cloth in this condition, if such a book is still out there somewhere, would probably bring about something in the range of $50,000. See Taves & Michaluk V006.
