their island home the castaways of the flag

Published Title Author Price
1924 THEIR ISLAND HOME + THE CASTAWAYS OF THE FLAG Verne, Jules $ 1750.00

Verne, Jules. THEIR ISLAND HOME. The Later Adventures of the Swiss Family Robinson. Plus: THE CASTAWAYS OF THE FLAG. The Final Adventures of the Swiss Family Robinson. [Together, two volumes.] Frontispiece [in each] by H. C. Murphy. New York: G. Howard Watt, 1924. Original maroon cloth with affixed front cover color illustration. 2 vols.

First American Editions. Just as Verne wrote a sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM with his AN ANTARCTIC MYSTERY (1897), so too did he write, three years later, SECONDE PATRIE (SECOND FATHERLAND) as a sequel to Johann Wyss's THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON. (In Verne's Preface to the original French edition, he noted that THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON and ROBINSON CRUSOE were his two favorite boyhood stories.)

It would be almost a quarter-century after the original 1900 French edition before this title came out in English -- in these two volumes, first in 1923 by Sampson Low of London, then a year later by G. Howard Watt of New York (as here). During the delay in publishing this in English, which included the Great War, the era of the magnificent pictorial trade binding had unfortunately come to an end.

These are fine, clean copies. Taves & Michaluk V049; Myers 50.
