Service, Robert W. THE RHYMES OF A RED CROSS MAN. Illustrated by Charles R. Wrenn. New York: Barse & Hopkins, (1916). Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black, khaki and gilt.
First Illustrated American Edition of this volume of World War I verse by the best known Canadian poet of the war (often referred to as "the Canadian Kipling"). It is dedicated to his brother, who had just been killed in action. The first issue of the first American edition was issued in rather plain green cloth, unillustrated; this second issue, later the same year, is from the same plates but includes a decorative title page, color plates as well as some line drawings on textual leaves, and a grand pictorial binding. This is an unsually fine, bright copy (white cover pigment just a bit rubbed) of this handsome book. Mitham A8.c.2.
