THE CRUISE OF THE CACHALOT |
Bullen, Frank T. |
$ 295.00 |
Bullen, Frank T. ("First Mate"). THE CRUISE OF THE CACHALOT. Round the World after Sperm Whales. With Illustrations. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1899. Original pea green cloth pictorially decorated in black, white and yellow.
First Authorized American Edition of this volume about the author's actual whaling experiences.
In the following pages an attempt has been made... to give an account of the cruise of a South Sea whaler from the seaman's standpoint... Its aim is to present to the general reader a simple account of the methods employed, and the dangers met with, in a calling about which the great mass of the public knows absolutely nothing. [from the Preface]
Bullen had sold all rights in the book (for fifty pounds) to Smith Elder, who published the book in London in 1898 but failed to secure the American copyright. Bullen's next volume would be THE LOG OF A SEA-WAIF. On the verso of the dedication leaf is printed a highly-complimentary letter from Rudyard Kipling dated December 1898 (".. I've never read anything that equals it in its deep-sea wonder and mystery..."). A bright, near-fine copy (front endpaper creased). See Wolff 916/916a; Stewart (Kipling) 228.
