an entirely unopened copy of the novel left unfinished at Trollope's death
Trollope, Anthony. THE LANDLEAGUERS. In Three Volumes. London: Chatto & Windus, 1883. 32 pp Vol III ads dated Oct 1883. Original dark green cloth decorated in yellow.
3 vols.
First Edition of this novel left unfinished at the time of Trollope's death in December 1882; Trollope had written 49 of his planned 60 chapters, and the first two had appeared serially in a weekly called Life, when he died. This three-decker was published in October 1883, when that serialization was complete; his son Henry ("H. M. T.") wrote a short postscript for the novel, quickly relating how his father had intended to tie up the loose threads of the plot. The plot itself is about Irish Landleaguers, who incite villagers to revolt against the landowners by refusing to pay rent and sabotaging fields -- "More of a tract on the agrarian troubles in Ireland in 1879-81, than a novel... Sad accounts of wretched actuality, in which characterization is submerged in floods of almost literal fact" [Gerould / Sadleir]
This copy is entirely unopened, and is otherwise in very good-to-near-fine condition (very minor shelfwear, including a nick in one spine head; the original endpapers are clean and intact. This is quite a scarce title, especially in this condition. Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 68. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase.
