Dunbar, Paul Laurence. CANDLE-LIGHTIN' TIME. Illustrated with Photographs by the Hampton Institute Camera Club and decorations by Margaret Armstrong. New York: Dodd Mead & Co., 1901. Original green cloth decorated in brown, dark green, cream and gilt.
First Edition of this volume of verse, in dialect, by this early black American poet. "Candle-lightin' time" is after dinner, when the children gather around and their Dad uses his hands to make shadow creatures on the wall. The photographs are of black men, women and children, mostly around their homes and fields. Of particular interest is Dunbar's poem "When Dey Listed Colored Soldiers": a black father aches to see his son go off to fight for the Union -- against their former masters. All but one of these poems ("Lullaby") had appeared earlier in 1901 in "Shoemaker's Best Selections for Readings and Recitations."
This edition is highly sought, for several reasons: it includes early black American literature, it contains early photographs, and it includes page decorations and a binding designed by Margaret Armstrong. This copy has the title page printed in black and red (like the deposit copy; others were printed in black and green); it is in near-fine condition (cover gilt slightly oxidized, as always). Blanck 4937; Gullans & Espey 80.
