Maugham, W. Somerset. THE CIRCLE. A Comedy in Three Acts. New York: George H. Doran Company, n.d. [1921]. Original grey paper-covered boards with spine label, with dust jacket.
First American Edition of "the play which is thought to be his [Maugham's] best."
THE CIRCLE has worn better than Maugham's other plays, and was revived in 1944 with John Gielgud... The play's theme, that we must make our own mistakes, is true in any generation. The romantic young wife of an insipid member of the British upper classes falls in love with an intense young rubber planter on leave from Malaya. Should she flout social convention and run away with the planter?... Recognizing that love does not last, the young man does not promise her happiness, but love with its pains and problems. The young woman decides that she must discover the fallacy of romance for herself, and as the curtain falls she and her planter are off for the Federated Malay States. [Morgan]
This volume is in fine condition; the quite fragile and hence rather scarce dust jacket is very good (very minor edgewear, a couple of wrinkles on the rear panel, prior owner's inkstamp at edge of front panel). Toole Stott A24b.
