1875 THE SURVIVORS OF THE CHANCELLOR Verne, Jules $ 1450.00

Verne, Jules. THE SURVIVORS OF THE CHANCELLOR. Diary of J. R. Kazallon, Passenger. Translated from the French by Ellen Frewer. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1875. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled, all edges gilt.

First British Edition (also the first illustrated edition in English) -- published in November 1875, several months after Osgood's little unillustrated volume. The binding of this volume shows, on its front cover, survivors on a makeshift raft (plus another in the foreground waving for help), with the "Chancellor" sinking in the distance. T&M describes a different binding scene, with despairing survivors inside and around a makeshift tent -- but describes a scene similar to this copy's on copies that Osgood issued, from British sheets, for the 1875 holiday season. As with the American edition, the volume also includes the early Verne tale "Martin Paz," though it is not mentioned on the title page.

This is a very good copy, quite bright, that has been rebacked using the original spine and endpapers (noticeable only at the spine ends and inner hinges). This U.K. edition is considerably scarcer than the American edition. Taves & Michaluk  V014; Myers 47.
