Verne, Jules. DOCTOR OX, and Other Stories. Translated from the French by George M. Towle. Authorized Edition. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1874. Original blindstamped terra cotta cloth decorated in gilt.
First American Edition (and first edition in English). The tales in this collection, in addition to "Doctor Ox's Experiment," are "Master Zacharius," "A Drama in the Air," "A Winter in the Ice" and "The Fortieth French Ascension of Mont Blanc" (this last item written by Jules's brother Paul). "Doctor Ox's Experiment" is a mad escapade of a scientist overloading a small town's atmosphere with oxygen, to see if it will speed up the pace of life there to a virtual frenzy.
This edition was published in late June or early July 1874, the same year as the original French. This is a near-fine copy (front endpaper slightly cracked). Taves & Michaluk V012; Myers 16.
