First English Edition, later impression (dated 1887 rather than 1884) of the first half of KERABAN THE INFLEXIBLE. The first English edition was initially issued in olive brown cloth that has a polychrome pictorial design, with all edges gilt; copies were also available, at a slightly lower price, in green cloth decorated in black (and no edges gilt). A "second edition" of both volumes (really a second impression) was published in 1887; that edition appears only in the green cloth binding. This copy is such a copy except that it does not read "Second Edition" on the title page -- possibly a third impression, still in 1887?
