New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. Original light brown cloth.
First Edition (published nine days before the London edition). This is a strange novel in which an unnamed narrator goes to a weekend gathering in the English countryside, where he tries to figure out -- learn the truth about the love lives of -- his fellow guests, simply by observing each's behavior and appearance. This copy does have a divisional title leaf (essentially another half-title) inserted after the half-title and title leaves -- which E&L states occurs in some but not most copies of the first impression, but which Supino says may indicate a copy of the second impression. This copy, in the primary binding (of three), is in very good-plus condition -- fine except that the spine (as is often the case) is a bit faded. Supino 55.1.0 and/or 55.3.0; Edel & Laurence A55a.
