A BRAVE COWARD. A Novel.

New York: F.M. Lupton, March 15, 1890. Original self-wrappers.

Early American edition (pirated), of the tale originally published as "The Pavilion on the Links" -- in Cornhill Magazine in 1880, and then in the two-volume NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS in 1882. (By some, including Arthur Conan Doyle, it was considered to be "the first English short story"; it would appear as a silent film in 1920.) Here it was issued in 1890 as No. 280 in Lupton's "Leisure Hour Library," priced at three cents (proud to proclaim itself as the "Cheapest Library Ever Issued"): the tale occupies the first eight pages of this 16-page triple-column periodical. Good-plus condition (final leaf torn, with a little loss at the fore-edge) -- quite a survival, as this cheaply-produced piece was designed to be read once and then discarded. Not cited in any of the Stevenson bibliographies. Item #14478

Price: $125.00
