FROM THE CLOUDS TO THE MOUNTAINS. Jules Verne.

FROM THE CLOUDS TO THE MOUNTAINS.

Comprising Narratives of Strange Adventures by Air, Land, and Water. With a Chapter by Paul Verne, Brother of Jules Verne. Translated by A. L. Alger. In Five Parts. Boston: William F. Gill and Company, 1874. Original green cloth decorated in black and gilt.

First Illustrated Edition in English. This collection of five pieces was published earlier in 1874 in France, and also barely earlier in 1874 by Osgood of Boston in a small unillustrated volume titled DOCTOR OX, AND OTHER STORIES. Later in 1874, a more fully-illustrated edition was published by Sampson Low of London, and in 1875 by Osgood.~This copy has the binding in the first state, with (on the front cover) a gilt ballooning scene in the upper-left corner, and three gilt climbers on the black mountainside at lower right; a second binding state lacks just these gilt vignettes, and a third lacks all decoration entirely. The cloth color is green (there is also terra-cotta, without priority). Condition is fine -- clean, bright, and with only the merest hint of shelf-wear at the foot of the spine; this is not a scarce title, but it's tough to find in this condition.
