The First English-Language Edition of the Original "Lost" Manuscript. Introduction by Olivier Dumas. Translated by Benjamin Ivry. New York: Welcome Rain, (2002). Original cream boards, with dust jacket.

First Edition in English of Verne's original manuscript. It is a tale of a mysterious Western man who is forced to assume the role of a demigod in the land around the Strait of Magellan, when a thousand immigrants become stranded there in a storm...~Verne wrote this tale in 1897, but at the time of his death in 1905, this was one of six tales left in manuscript form. With the blessing of French publisher Hetzel, Verne's son Michel completely re-wrote the tale and it was published in 1910 as LES NAUFRAGES DU JONATHAN ("The Survivors of the Jonathan"). In 1962 this version was published in English, as part of the Fitzroy Edition of Verne's works. However, in 1977 Piero Gondolo della Riva discovered Verne's original manuscript in Hetzel family archives, and in 1985 the Société Jules Verne published the first edition of that version in French; this is the first edition in English of the tale as Verne wrote it. Fine, in fine jacket. See Taves & Michaluk V062. Item #10657
