New York: John W. Lovell Company, n.d. . Original brown cloth decorated in black.
Early (first?) American edition. This Hardy novel first appeared serially in Atlantic Monthly, where it ran from May through December 1882, paving the way for it to be pirated once complete. The three-volume English edition came out at the end of October, as well. Early in December, three American editions came out -- the authorized one, in Henry Holt's "Leisure Hour Series," plus two pirated ones, in John Lovell's "Lovell's Library" and in George Munro's "Seaside Library." Purdy notes,~The Holt and Munro editions are listed in Publishers' Weekly, 9 December. The Lovell's Library edition is not listed at all and may have been a bit earlier. It [the cheaper version bound in wrappers] is dated 14 November, but such dates are hardly trustworthy.~This is one of the copies bound in cloth, with "Lovell's Library" at the top of the spine. Condition is near-fine (just a bit of rubbing at the corners), with some faint foxing on the extremely cheap textual paper. See Purdy p. 47. Item #11482
