With Illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele. Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, (1914). Original blind-stamped green cloth.
First American Edition of this collection of mysterious tales featuring Doctor Dollar, the Crime Doctor -- one of the first fictional detectives to solve crimes using psychological techniques. Among the eight cases are "A Hopeless Case," "One Possessed" and "The Second Murderer." Frederic Dorr Steele did the illustrations -- as he did for many of Sherlock Holmes's later cases. Hornung in fact was Arthur Conan Doyle's brother-in-law, and was here trying to create his own Sherlockian success. This is a fine copy. Item #11503
