First Edition of this mystery, one of Anna Katharine Green's earliest. The narrator is forced by a furious rainstorm to stop and spend the night along the road between Albany and Poughkeepsie, and delves into the mystery of the deserted haunted house there. There are many illustrations by Victor Perard. The relatively unknown publishing house of Robert Bonner, at William and Spruce Streets in New York, issued principally novels by women writers.~This copy is in light brown cloth (there were also other colors of cloth, plus copies issued in wrappers), and is in very good-plus condition (minor rubbing at the edges, a few small cover spots).
