With Illustrative Engravings. London: Henry G. Bohn, 1852. Original red blind-stamped cloth decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt.
First English Edition of this collection of six tales for children, adapted from Greek myths. The tales are "The Gorgon's Head," "The Golden Touch," "The Paradise of Children," "The Three Golden Apples," "The Miraculous Pitcher" and "The Chimaera."
A WONDER-BOOK's American edition came out on 8 November 1851 (though dated 1852). This English edition was published later that December, though it too is dated 1852; there would not be another English printing (by Routledge but from these Bohn plates) until late 1867.
This copy is in the special "gift binding" of coarsely-pebbled red cloth with an elaborate gilt design on the front cover (and with all page edges gilt). A curiosity of this book is that the title on the front cover and spine reads "THE WONDER BOOK" (rather than "A"). Condition is very good-plus (spine slightly darkened, a few faint cover marks); the original endpapers are still in good shape, and there is no foxing within. This English edition is much scarcer than the American. Clark A18.2.a; Blanck 7606; Peter Parley to Penrod p. 6. Item #11989
