London (and New York): Frederick Warne & Co., 1908. Original maroon cloth, beveled, with front cover pictorial onlay.
First Edition, first printing. Tom Kitten disobeys his mother and goes hunting for adventure, but is captured by Samuel Whiskers and his fellow rats, who then steal dough and other ingredients to prepare a kitten pie. THE ROLY-POLY PUDDING was first published, in this large-format maroon cloth, in 1908 (two printings with that date on the title page, then a third in 1913); in 1918 it was published (undated) in paper-covered boards; and in 1926 the book was issued in the small format, and with the title changed to THE TALE OF SAMUEL WHISKERS.~This copy is from the first printing, with "[All rights reserved]" below the date 1908 on the title page. Condition is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine: the cloth is slightly faded (though as Quinby points out, the cloth is "mixed light and dark threads"), and there is just a touch of wear at the corners; inside, two textual leaves have short closed edge-tears. The front endpaper bears a Christmas 1908 gift inscription. Quinby No. 15; Linder p. 427. Item #12388
