A Comic Burletta, in Two Acts. By "Boz." First Performed at the St. James's Theatre, on Thursday, September 29, 1836. London: Chapman and Hall, 1837 [but 1871]. Original printed wrappers.
This is a copy of the 1871 facsimile of the 1837 original edition, which by 1871 had already become quite rare. This was Dickens's first play to be performed, though it was his second to be published (after THE VILLAGE COQUETTES, 1836). It is very "early Dickens," written before PICKWICK PAPERS; it is based on one of his "Sketches by Boz," "The Great Winglebury Duel."
This copy has the frontispiece plate by Pailthorpe, which in this copy is not colored (no known priority: presumably having a colored frontispiece was an optional extra for buyers). Just the slightest of soil but this is a remarkably FINE copy. Eckel pp 154-156; Podeschi B41. Item #12742
