Chicago & New York: Herbert S. Stone & Company, 1898. Original dark grey-green cloth decorated in gilt.
First American Edition, issued a month after the London one -- of this distinctly-bound production by Herbert Stone of Chicago (in the same binding he used the prior year for James's WHAT MAISIE KNEW). This is a short novel about a telegraph girl ("in the cage"), who willingly becomes involved in a wealthy couple's illicit liaison -- details of which are revealed in their frequent telegrams to each other.
This is an unusually bright copy, fine except for the usual minor cracking of these very fragile endpapers. Supino 51.5.0; Edel & Laurence A51b. Item #13165
