New York: Random House, 1931. Original marbled red paper-covered boards with front cover label.
First Edition, this being copy #265 of the 400 numbered copies SIGNED by Faulkner. A man goes up into the mountains of Arizona to try to recover from lung disease; a woman leaves her husband and two young children to join him there, nursing him back to health; he takes off, leaving her there to waste away from the disease she has contracted from him; as she declines she receives money from someone she believes to be her lover, but it is in fact from her husband... Numerous magazines rejected this story; it was ultimately picked up by Bennett Cerf at Random House for this edition.
This is a near-fine copy, with some minor wear at the fragile spine; it was issued without a printed dust jacket. Item #13186
