[Mt. Vernon NY: The Golden Eagle Press | Covici Friede, 1936.] Original decorated boards with gold spine lettered in red.
First Edition, consisting of 199 numbered copies SIGNED by John Steinbeck (this being #162). This was produced as a Christmas gift for employees and friends of the Covici Friede publishing house (in some copies, but now lacking here and in most copies, there was a loosely-inserted slip expressing Christmas greetings while hyping the soon-to-be-published OF MICE AND MEN). Saint Katy is, incidentally, a pig.~Except for a little rubbing of the delicate surface-patterned boards, this is a remarkably fine copy; it was issued without a printed dust jacket -- only with an acetate wrapper (no longer present). This copy is now enclosed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. Goldstone & Payne A6a. Item #13192
