First Edition, issued as the 29th volume (of 33) in the provocative "Keynotes Series," published by John Lane. Shiel's first book, PRINCE ZALESKI, had been the seventh book in the same series. SHAPES IN THE FIRE is a loosely-connected group of tales of supernatural horror, derivative in subject matter from Edgar Allan Poe -- "one of the landmark books of the genre" according to Bleiler.~This is a very good-plus copy (spine darkened, a nick in the spine-head, general light rubbing).
