A TALE OF TWO CITIES. Charles Dickens.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES.

Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson and Brothers, n.d. [late 1860s]. 12 pp undated ads. Original printed wrappers.

First American Edition, later impression. This volume of "Peterson's Uniform Edition of Dickens' Works" has 211 pages of unillustrated text -- which is the earliest format -- and it is bound in wrappers, which is the earliest form of binding. (Peterson first issued this format in late November 1859; later formats include this 211-page text bound in cloth supplemented with separate illustrations and, later, two-volume duodecimo and one-volume octavo cloth editions of varying pagination, with illustrations integrated into the text.)~Though this copy is in the earliest format, it is a later impression, as the rear cover mentions GREAT EXPECTATIONS (not published until 1861) and an ad leaf cites OUR MUTUAL FRIEND (1865).~Condition is very good-plus, with the wrappers remarkably complete (even the spine) -- with edge-wear of the wrappers. Smith pp 354-361 (this copy illustrated there -- because, as Smith notes, "A copy of the presumed first issue in paper covers has not been found"); Wilkins pp 30-31; See Podeschi (Yale) D25. Item #13460
