THE HISTORICAL NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENT. Rafael Sabatini.

THE HISTORICAL NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENT.

London: Martin Secker, n.d.[1917]. 8 pp undated ads. Original grey paper-covered boards with brown cloth spine and printed spine label.

First Edition. This was the first of Sabatini's three series of fictionalized historical events -- followed by other series in 1919 and in 1938. The thirteen episodes all have "The Night of..." titles -- specifically: "...Holyrood," "...Kirk o' Field," "...Betrayal," "...Charity," "...Massacre," "...Witchcraft," "...Gems," "...Terror," "...Nuptials," "...Stranglers," "...Hate," "...Escape" and "...Masquerade." In his Preface, Sabatini says he chose "more or less famous events... which were in themselves bizarre and resulting from the interplay of human passions."~This is a near-fine copy (top edge of spine label scuffed away, barely affecting the first word of the title). This UK edition of the first series is rather scarce, being a wartime book published before Sabatini found his stride, after the war, with books like SCARAMOUCHE and CAPTAIN BLOOD. Item #13506
