MAY MARTIN: or The Money Diggers.

A Green Mountain Tale. Montpelier [VT]: E.P. Walton and Son, 1835. Original tan muslin embossed with dots.

First Edition of Pierce's second book, a tale of romance and buried treasure in the hills of Vermont. Pierce (1795-1868) was an 1820 graduate of Middlebury College who became first a lawyer and then an author, in the state capital Montpelier (where he also served as Secretary of State); he went on to become New England's best-known author of the 1840s (until the emergence of Nathaniel Hawthorne). As Thompson noted in his Preface to the 1850 edition, he wrote this "Green Mountain tale" during the evenings of March 1835, and decided to have it published only when tempted by a $50.00 prize offered by the New England Galaxy (which he won).~This copy is in tan muslin embossed with dots (others were in blue -- no priority); according to Blanck some copies had a spine label and others gold lettering -- but with this copy it is difficult to see which this might have originally had. Condition is good-plus, with wear at the extremities and a small hole in the last two leaves. Blanck 19958; Wright I 2576. Item #13529

Price: $350.00
