being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751... Written by Himself. Illustrated. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1887. Original brown cloth pictorially decorated in black.
First American Illustrated Edition. In July 1886 the first English and American editions (unillustrated except for a map frontispiece) were published on the same day. In mid-1887 the first English illustrated edition was published -- actually a later issue of the first edition, with W.H. Hole plates inserted. This Scribner's edition, with the W.H. Hole plates, was undoubtedly issued at about the same time -- perhaps slightly earlier (curiously, this Scribner's edition is absent from the exhaustive Beinecke collection).~This is an attractive, near-fine copy (spine very slightly dulled, a touch of rubbing at the extremities) of what we consider to be a none-too-common book. See Beinecke 385 (English edition only); Princeton 31E. Item #13540
