London: William Heinemann, 1897. 1 page undated ads. Original blind-stamped aqua blue cloth.
First Edition of this novel in which a spineless man and the contents ("spoils") of his estate are pulled in opposite directions by two conniving women. Of the 2000 total copies, this is one of the 300 printed for the colonies that were instead bound up for the domestic market (with nine tulips on the front cover, "THE" on a separate line on the spine, and no half-title -- the colonial one having been removed from these copies). Though not the first binding state, the comparatively small number of copies so bound makes it probably the least common.~This is a remarkably fine, bright copy, with virtually no wear at all. Supino 48.5.0; Edel & Laurence A48a (and plates VI-VII). Item #13554
