[a publisher's proof copy] A Stage Play. London: Macmillan and Co., 1938. Original plain tan wrappers.
First Edition, of which this is a publisher's proof copy, bound in plain tan wrappers instead of maroon cloth. Consisting of only 1600 copies, this was "one of Yeats's last and most controversial plays... It contains bloodshed, murder, rape and suicide, ... [yet] it is lighter than his two later farces... Written near the end of his life, [it] is more symbolic, absurdist, pretend-näive, and riddling than any other of his dramas" [Parkin/Buffalo].~This copy in plain tan wrappers is fine except that someone (perhaps the publisher?) hand-wrote the title etc. on the front cover and spine. Wade 195. Item #13595
