[four creped paper booklets] [Together, four volumes.] Tokyo: T. Hasegawa, [1898] | [1899] | [1902] | [1903]. Original color pictorial creped paper, tied with silk.

First Editions of all four of the early Japanese Fairy Tales that Lafcadio Hearn "rendered into English". (There would later be a posthumous fifth, "The Fountain of Youth," which did not come out until 1922, 18 years after Hearn's death in 1904.) Hasegawa produced 20 such booklets before Hearn became involved; these were issued separately and then as a boxed set. Then the publisher began issuing further titles in that series, while he also began a "Second Series"; the publisher used multiple printers, which explains why there are multiple "first printings" issued on the same date. Complex bibliographically, the four early Hearn titles (as here offered) are, chronologically:~No. 23. The Boy Who Drew Cats. First Printing State B, (no priority), large format;~Second Series No. 1. The Goblin Spider. Presumed Second Printing (with colophon entirely in Japanese), small format -- in our experience this is the scarcest of the four;~No. 24. The Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling. First Printing State B (no priority), large format;~No. 25. Chin Chin Kobakama. First Printing State A (no priority), large format.~All four booklets are in fine condition, with the colors still quite bright and with scarcely any wear. A remarkable survival. Blanck 7930, 7932, 7937 & 7939. Housed in a (tired) cloth slipcase with inner chemise, which bears the small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of the noted collector Mrs. J. Insley Blair. Item #13706
