London: Elkin Mathews, 1903. Original light olive green wrappers.
First Edition of Masefield's second book, being the thirteenth volume in the publisher's "Vigo Cabinet Series." As with his first book (SALT-WATER BALLADS of the year before), this is a volume of verse of the sea; although 762 copies of BALLADS were issued (compared to 500 of the earlier book), we find this to be the scarcer of the two -- undoubtedly because it was issued in delicate wrappers rather than in cloth.~The leaves of this copy are partly unopened, and the book itself is in remarkably fine condition -- a little of the usual fading but entirely without wear. It is housed in a (spotted) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise, which bears the small leather bookplate of [Major] W. Van R. Whitall, collector and bibliographer, whose notable library was sold at a 1927 auction. Simmons 2. Item #13735
