THE WAY WE LIVE NOW. Anthony Trollope.

THE WAY WE LIVE NOW.

A Novel. With Illustrations. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1875. 4 pp preliminary undated ads plus 8 pp undated (but "summer") ads. Original terra-cotta cloth.

First American Edition of one of Trollope's six "social satire" novels, published a month after the London two-decker (and with many of the same illustrations -- which Sadleir ascribes to Luke Fildes, but which have subsequently been attributed to Lionel Fawkes). This is the tale of the rise and fall of Augustus Melmotte's financial empire -- and its effect on his daughter's options for marriage. Though Walpole praised this book up and down ("one of the most remarkable of all English novels published between 1860 and 1890"), Trollope himself thought little of it:~The book has all the fault which is to be attributed to almost all satires... The accusations are exaggerated. The vices are coloured, so as to make effect rather than to represent truth.~This copy is in terra-cotta cloth; we have also seen green (no priority). It is in very good condition (some wear at the extremities and near the fore-edge of each cover). Sadleir (TROLLOPE) p. 147. Item #13757
