PHANTASMAGORIA and Other Poems.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1869. Original royal blue cloth decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt.

First Edition of this early volume of verse, published just four years after ALICE. The volume consists of 13 amusing poems in Part I, and 13 serious poems in Part II.~The title-poem... is well adapted to remove all fear of ghosts from nervous people, by representing that it is no pleasure at all to the ghosts to howl on battlements on wet nights, or to clank chains... The word Phantasmagoria was invented in 1802, and seems to mean a Gathering of Ghosts [WM&G].~This copy is of the second (and most-frequently-seen) of three issues: the first (600 copies?) makes no mention of "Author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"" on the title page, the second (as here -- 1000 copies) does, and the third is the same as the second except that the final leaf verso (here blank) has ads. Condition is very good-plus: as usual the spine is darkened to a navy blue, there is minor wear at the head of the spine, and the front (original brown) endpaper is slightly cracked.
