First Edition of this loosely-connected collection of ten stories of "dames," published just before TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES. One of them, "Barbara of the House of Grebe," is considered to represent Hardy at his most horrific.~This copy is in the primary binding, with the front cover decoration in gilt (rather than in brown). It is in near-fine condition (one tiny mark on the front cover, very light soil). The front free endpaper bears the penciled signature of the bibliographer of Victorian literature, Walter E. Smith.
