[in original wrappers] A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1866. Original light brown printed wrappers (dated Jan 1866 on the rear wrapper).
First Edition printed in America, issued as No. 263 of Harper's "Library of Select Novels." As Smith describes in great detail, in preparing the UK edition for publication, Chapman & Hall, arranged to send to Lippincott, of Philadelphia, some sets of sheets -- to the great astonishment and irritation of Trollope himself -- who when he discovered the plan, told C&H not to do so, but it happened nonetheless. Thus there was an edition, printed in England but bearing a Lippincott title page dated 1866, bound in cloth and for sale in America at $1.50 by a little before December 21, 1865; this Lippincott issue is actually the true first edition of the novel -- as C&H's three-volume edition did not come out until December 30th. Harper, undoubtedly pirating from Lippincott's edition, got this edition onto the streets on January 5, 1866, priced at only 50 cents as usual (in wrappers only -- no copies were issued in cloth).~This is a very good copy: both the front and rear wrapper are essentially complete (a few small edge-chips); however the fragile spine of the wrapper is perished. Smith pp 80-81 (and see pp 75-79 for the Lippincott history). Provenance: this copy's title page bears the penciled signature of the Trollope bibliographer Walter Smith. Item #13839
