With Illustrations by Joseph Pennell. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1905. Original very dark blue-green cloth decorated in gilt and yellow-green.
First American Edition, trade issue, which consisted of 2000 copies (there were also 400 numbered copies, in a different binding). Designed by Bruce Rogers, this was published (ten days after the London one) as a "holiday edition"; it was bound as a companion volume to James and Pennell's A LITTLE TOUR IN FRANCE, of five years earlier. All but the last two essays had previously appeared in book form (though without the Pennell illustrations). This is a bright copy, fine except for the tiniest bit of erosion of the front-cover gilt -- of a very handsomely-produced volume. Supino 62.8.0; Edel & Laurence A62b. Item #13844
