First Edition of this southern novel which today is most collected for being Maxfield Parrish's very first book cover illustration, and for being a magnificent book designed by Way & Williams of Chicago. Though the cover illustration (front and back) is not initialed, the title verso carries the note "The cover designed by Mr. Maxfield Parrish"; it shows Senator Talcom standing, cigar in hand, in front of the Mississippi town of Bolanyo. At the end of the book is the note, "This book has been printed during May, 1897, by the Blakely Printing Company, Chicago, for Way & Williams." The frontispiece and the illustrations in the text are by Charles Francis Browne.~This is an attractive copy, near-fine with very light wear at some corners. Wright III 4459. Item #13858
