Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923. Original blue cloth, with dust jacket.
First Trade Edition (preceded one day earlier by a 377-copy special edition), published before the English edition.~This volume is in fine condition, and the jacket is just about fine as well (very slightly tanned, as usual). Keating 179.~This copy's front free endpaper bears an almost-full-page signed presentation inscription, "Signed at the request of Walter Tittle for Miss Jean Campbell with best wishes by [signed] Joseph Conrad New Year's Day 1924". Sadly, this New Year's Day would be Conrad's last -- as he would die on August 3rd of the year just beginning. On 12 November 1922, Allan Wade (who was then trying to help Conrad get his dramatic version of THE SECRET AGENT onto the stage) had paid a visit to the Conrads' home, bringing with him the American portraitist Walter Tittle (1883-1966), whom Conrad admired; that day Tittle did an etching of Conrad, which would subsequently be selected as the frontispiece for Dent's Collected Edition of his works .~Provenance: small "SJS" bookplate of Stanley J. Seeger -- see Sotheby's Seeger lot #363. Item #13859
