A Trio & Quartette. Chicago & Cambridge: Stone & Kimball, 1894. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black.
First Edition, published more than two months before Heinemann's London edition. Stevenson and his stepson contracted to write this in 1888. Osbourne began it at once, but (in his own words) "try as I would I could not please RLS; I wrote and rewrote, and rewrote again, but always to have him shake his head." Osbourne laid it aside and never resumed it, but some five years later Stevenson picked it up and completed it; it was published in July 1894, five months before he died.~This copy is in the darker green cloth (no priority); it is a fine copy of this handsome Stone & Kimball production (early catalogue descriptions tipped onto front endpaper). Beinecke (Yale) 600; Princeton 56 (copy 2). Item #13924
